Just to give an overview: Alexandrite also known as GenteLase is a very powerful near infrared laser hair removal machine for patients with lighter skin types I-III. These are Caucasians and Asians with very light skin tone. It has excellent pick up by melanin (skin and hair pigment), which makes it great for patients with lighter skin tones, but not a good option for those with darker skin.  Alexandrite laser provides quicker, safer and more effective results compared to other lasers with proper settings.  Since it has the shortest pulse duration (or cooking time), it can also effectively lase thinner or lighter pigmented hairs.

 

Long Pulse ND:Yag also known as GentleYag is an infrared laser that is most effective for patients with Skin Types IV-VI.  The principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis, the matching of light and pulse duration to obtain optimal effect on melanin without affecting the surrounding tissue.  Since it has a deeper wavelength, it goes straight to the melanin in the hair follicle without causing damage to the upper layer of the skin that also has melanin, for patients with darker skin type.  It is most comfortable compared to other lasers when treating patients with Skin Type IV-VI, which are Hispanics, Middle Eastern people and most Filipinos.

 

 

How is IPL different from Medical Lasers?

IPL (or Intense Pulsed Light) is actually not a laser.  It uses a broad spectrum of light unlike lasers like Diode, Alexandrite and ND:Yag that uses a single wavelength that effectively targets the melanin in our hair follicle.  This allows concentrated target to the hair bulb that is the life source of the hair.
