What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin also known as Botox is a purified substance derived from bacteria. When administered as an injection, it blocks certain chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to relax facial muscles, reducing frown lines and other facial wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin injections are also used to ease symptoms of various health conditions, such as lazy eye and hyperhidrosis, among others.
Here’s what to expect when getting Botox
After booking your Botox appointment, whether it’s for crow’s feet, fine lines, wrinkles, masseter muscles, or for excessive sweating, you should know what to expect before, during, and after your session to help you prepare and achieve the best possible results.
Before the Procedure
You should have a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist. During this consultation, you and the dermatologist will discuss your skin goals and manage expectations. The dermatologist will assess your needs, advise on options, and explain the pros and cons of each.
During the Procedure
The assisting nurse will apply a local anesthetic to numb the area. The area will then be marked, cleaned, and sanitized. A cold compress may be used for added comfort. The dermatologist will inject small doses of botulinum toxin into the predetermined spots on your face. The procedure itself takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Although the needles used for Botox are very small, you might feel a brief, sharp prick at the injection site.
After the Procedure
For best results, avoid getting a facial or head massage for 24 hours after receiving Botox. Refrain from rubbing your face in the treated area. Also, do not lie down for at least 1 hour following the procedure. Avoid saunas, hot tubs, or tanning booths for at least 4 hours.
Now that you have all the information, there’s no reason not to be prepared before, during, and after your toxin treatment! Also, don’t forget to ask your trusted clinic or board-certified dermatologist for pre-care and post-care instructions so you won’t miss a thing!
